and metal arts individually hand crafted in sterling silver, gold
and bronze with precious and semi-precious
gemstones.
Nancy works primarily in sterling silver
and uses gold, brass or bronze for special effects. She has developed several original and unique
design themes. Her work has won several awards.
In one design she creates artwork in the sterling silver setting of
larger cabochon gemstones. These can be
worn showing either the gemstone or the silver artwork side. When a clear gem (amber or agate) is used the
artwork appears in the gemstone.
In another design, nature scenes and
intricate branching trees are cut from sterling silver and brass. By soldering the silver on top of the brass,
a three dimensional scene is created.
Nancy likes to use trees, evergreens and Colorado wildlife in these
designs. She also creates delicate
opalescent enamels. These require hours
of work doing multiple interrupted firings and then setting the enamels in
sterling.
Recently she started creating large, two dimensional framed, metal arts cut from sheets of bronze or sterling. New in 2006 is the introduction of pieces made from Argentium sterling silver. The new sterling tarnishes less and has only recently become available to metal smiths. Argentium sterling is an alloy of 92.5% silver, 6.5% copper and 1.0% germanium. The small amount of germanium prevents formation of copper oxidizes that tarnish regular sterling. It is more expensive but well worth it. Nancy will benchmark these pieces AGSS
